Job Description

OATH is seeking to hire six attorneys to serve as special education hearing officers. This involves administering special education impartial due process hearings for students with disabilities, aged 3-21, under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Responsibilities include conducting hearings remotely and in person, evaluating evidence, maintaining courtroom procedures, facilitating settlement conferences between parents and the NYC Department of Education, and issuing written decisions. Also, the role requires conducting legal research on state and federal education laws, the IDEA, Section 504, and special education programs. Maintaining professionalism and handling matters promptly is essential. Additional assignments and projects, including oral and written presentations, may be required. New York State Education Department impartial hearing officer training will be provided.
