Design Engineer

About the Role:

• AI Gateway is a product that gives developers a single place to connect to hundreds of models with one API key, handling routing, fallbacks, billing, and observability.
• You will be the Design Engineer owning product design and frontend implementation across dashboard, CLI, and APIs, working closely with a Product Manager and engineering team.
• This role offers the chance to shape a live developer product with room for design-led improvements across Vercel.

What You Will Do:

• Own product design and frontend implementation for the AI Gateway, from model discovery to production operation.
• Design and build experiences across website, dashboard, CLI, and APIs, choosing the right medium for each problem.
• Talk directly with customers and use product data to define success, make tradeoffs, and improve what ships.
• Use coding agents to explore and implement ideas quickly while taking responsibility for code quality and edge cases.

About You:

• You build production-quality web applications with React and TypeScript and can contribute confidently in a large codebase.
• You bring strong visual and interaction craft, making technical products understandable without removing control for advanced users.
• You use customer research and product data for decisions, communicate reasoning clearly, and adapt when evidence changes.
• You can work across graphical interfaces, CLI workflows, API behavior, and implementation details, with a focus on accessibility and performance.

Compensation and Benefits:

• The San Francisco base pay range is $208,000 - $312,000, adjusted for location, with total compensation including equity and bonus potential.
