Job Description

The NYC Law Department is seeking a Deputy Chief for its General Litigation Division. The role involves representing the City in federal and state court litigation in diverse areas such as education, prison conditions, and election law. Recent cases involve accessibility for disabled persons, conditions at NYC jails, and educational programs for special needs children. The Deputy Chief will assist the Chief in overseeing the Division's work, managing attorneys and support staff. Responsibilities include supervising a team of attorneys, advising on legal matters, preparing division reports, and reviewing case abstracts. They will also update training materials and litigate complex, high-profile cases. After orientation, attorneys can elect to work remotely under two programs: limited/irregular remote work or two set days per week, subject to division approval and coverage needs. Participants in the pilot program must set one work from home location where they will work remotely. Applicants should have extensive experience litigating and counseling, supervisory experience, excellent communication skills, and strong organizational abilities. Admission to the bars of New York State, and the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, is required.
