Senior News Writer

Wealthsimple Media intends to hire a senior news writer to help run TLDR. We want someone who can own the voice of the newsletter and make it their own — and wants to be something of a star. We have a large platform, and we want you to use it to build a name for yourself (and the newsletter). The TLDR team is obsessive about publishing the planet’s most interesting, useful, entertaining, and accurate money content. The senior news writer needs to have the ambition, smarts, and writing chops to make the newsletter better than it already is and to help expand the TLDR brand. A deep knowledge of finance or business would be a plus, but it’s not absolutely required. The writer should be able to deliver incisive analysis of front-page news just as well as he or she can unpack fintwit’s latest obsession, explain a chart showing AI’s circular deals , or interview a smart trader about the housing market . But we also expect the news writer to have a healthy dose of journalistic skepticism.

Here’s a more specific list of things the news writer will do and/or be great at:

5+ years of experience in an editorial role at a media outlet, or in a writing position at a financial institution

Act as lead writer for the TLDR newsletter and Wealthsimple Magazine

Help run the newsletter from concept to publication. Generate enterprise story ideas and create new editorial franchises

Excels at research and reporting.The role will require closely following the news, consulting sources, and synthesizing the day’s headlines

Has sharp editorial instincts and news judgment

Keeps up with pop culture and politics, and markets and technology

Can hustle. You’re a self-motivated person who proactively finds stories that other outlets miss

is creative. We don’t just want to do what we’ve already done; you’ll help push the newsletter into fresh new territory

Because TLDR goes out every Monday morning, the news writer will need to work a bit on Sundays. The TLDR team is large enough that you’ll have coverage for weekends you can’t work, plus the news writer will be able to make up the Sunday hours with time off during the work week.
