Director of Engineering, Workflows & Runners

Responsibilities:

• Own the strategy, architecture, and delivery of scalable, multi-tenant distributed systems serving as shared infrastructure.
• Drive operational excellence, including SLOs, incident response, and capacity planning across regions.
• Optimize for cost and efficiency at scale, balancing performance and unit economics.

Leadership and Collaboration:

• Build and scale a high-performing, values-aligned engineering organization, managing managers and senior engineers.
• Collaborate across Product Management, Security, Infrastructure, and other stage groups to ensure platform needs are met.
• Champion GitLab values in team planning, execution, and communication.

Qualifications and Experience:

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with 4–6+ years in multi-team engineering leadership.
• Proven experience building core platform services like workflow engines or function runtimes.
• Strong background in scalable distributed systems, production operations, and cloud cost efficiency.
• Ability to work effectively in a fully remote, globally distributed organization with excellent communication skills.
